The Historical Past Tense

The Passato Remoto is a past tense used primarily in literary texts, historical accounts, and biographies. It describes actions that were completed in the distant past and have no direct psychological or temporal link to the present.

Regular Endings

• -are (parlare): parlai, parlasti, parlò, parlammo, parlaste, parlarono
• -ere (credere): credei, credesti, credé, credemmo, credeste, crederono
• -ire (sentire): sentii, sentisti, sentì, sentimmo, sentiste, sentirono

Key Irregular Forms

Many common verbs have highly irregular root changes, particularly in the 1st singular (io), 3rd singular (lui/lei), and 3rd plural (loro) forms. For instance, nascere becomes nacqui, nacque, nacquero; vedere becomes vidi, vide, videro; and essere is entirely irregular: fui, fosti, fu, fummo, foste, furono.
