16. Il Periodo Ipotetico - Tipo 2 (Type 2 Conditionals)

The Periodo Ipotetico di Tipo 2 (Hypothetical Sentence of Possibility / Counterfactual in the Present) connects the Congiuntivo Imperfetto with the Condizionale Presente to express "What if..." situations in the present.

Formula

Se + Congiuntivo Imperfetto, Condizionale Presente

Se avessi tempo (hypothesis) → andrei al mare (result).
Se fossi in te (if I were you) → parlerei con il medico.

Golden Rule

Never put the conditional directly after "Se"! "Se" takes the Congiuntivo Imperfetto, and the main clause takes the Condizionale Presente.
